Hockey board shortlists men’s squad for Pan American Challenge

first_imgFollowing a weekend of open try-outs, where players were asked to complete a series of physical tests and game situations, the Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) has shortlisted 26 local men to begin preparation for the Pan American Challenge scheduled for June 27 to July 5, in Lima, Peru.  The tournament is the qualifier for the final two spots in the Pan American Cup, scheduled for 2021 in Trinidad & Tobago.  The squad includes 10 senior players and 16 members of the national under 21 squad which is also preparing for the Junior Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile in November of this year. Commenting on the selection process national coach Robert Fernandes stated:“Looking at the turnout at the tryouts it seems like we will be going through a transitional phase this year. Our last international tournament was the CAC Games in August 2018, so some of our most experienced national players have since transitioned to other priorities in their lives and didn’t try-out last weekend. That means that there is a large crop of new faces in this year’s squad. Although their lack of experience will be a challenge, they have displayed an infectious enthusiasm which has brought new energy to the entire process. They are very talented, intelligent and all seem willing to work hard and those are some of the main ingredients we need to produce a quality national team.”The 26 local players shortlisted are Dominic Alleyne, Jamarj Assanah, Rayon Branford, Sherwyn Caesar, Hilmar Chester, Hilton Chester, Edmond Chinian, Paul D’Andrade, Shakeem Fausette, Robert France, Shomere Garnett, Tahrea Garnett, Tivesarid Garnett, Jael Gaskin, Michael Hing, Troy Hodge, Randy Hope,Kareem Mc Kenzie, Tariq Nelson, John Phang, Mark Sargeant, Meshach Sargeant, Medroy Scotland, Theodore Thierens, David Williams and Samuel Woodroffe.last_img read more

Huddersfield owner says 50 or 60 clubs could go bust in next year

first_imgLONDON, (Reuters) – Up to 60 English lower league soccer clubs could go out of business if the sport fails to plan for the impact of COVID-19 beyond the current season, Huddersfield Town owner Phil Hodgkinson said on Sunday. English professional soccer has been suspended since March.Championship (second tier) clubs are due to return to training in small groups today, with hopes of completing the season behind closed doors.“The problem is not whether we finish (the) season or not, it is what happens after that,” Hodgkinson told the BBC. “If we don’t come to an agreement there will be no football pyramid.“There are clubs I know of that are only still trading because they are deferring wages and (tax) and other creditors. They will need paying at some point.”Hodgkinson said the worst case scenario would be playing next season without fans allowed to attend matches, leaving many clubs without their major source of income. Clubs are already facing significant expenditure for COVID-19 testing.  “There is an absolutely real, stark probability that if something isn’t agreed now within football to ensure all clubs can pay their bills and get through to the point where income is resumed, you will be looking at 50 or 60 clubs ceasing to exist,” said Hodgkinson. He suggested players’ wages needed to be reduced by 30 to 50% at every level until crowds could return, and accused some people in the game of “just sticking their heads in the sand.”last_img read more

first_imgJunior Hercules, head-coach of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Association (GABF) Senior Men’s team has revealed that the recently hosted sessions in the ongoing World Association of Basketball Coaches (WABC) Online Clinic, focused on developing offensive and defensive strategies which can be utilised over a long-term period. This statement was made by Hercules, who also is the GABF National 3×3 coordinator, during an exclusive interview yesterday with Stabroek Sport.According to Hercules, the subjects discussed during this period focused on creating structured offensive tactics which could be maintained. He elaborated, “The clinic’s focus over the last four weeks were: Development of systematic offensive Strategy with a focus on continuity. Most of what was demonstrated and expressed require high IQ players in the atmosphere conducive to learning.”Conversely, Hercules further revealed that the defensive tactics which were discussed, are beneficial to all sections of the sport, whether senior, junior or professional, but must be implemented to suit Guyana’s respective physical boundaries. He stated, “I tried to listen with the mindset of advancing the national programme taking into consideration Guyana’s physical limitation. The defensive system and modern basketball by Coach John Calipari were instructive and extremely useful for Junior, Senior, and professional levels. I am excited about the remaining three weeks especially from coach Patrick Mutombo a professional who focused on ‘Passing and Catching the Ball’.”The Coaching Clinics are being live streamed on the WABC’s Facebook channel twice a week. Bess endorses Ramson Jr.,

first_imgKeavon Bess, President of the bodybuilding federation has endorsed the new Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., and has called on him to do some heavy lifting. They include swiftly implementing the long awaited Sports Policy and properly supporting associations financially.Speaking with Stabroek Sports virtually yesterday, Bess highlighted the fact that Ramson Jr., has been an active participant within the sports fraternity and should have a great “understanding of the plight that sports persons face in Guyana.”Charles Ramson Jr.“It is important that we remember the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports is 36-years-old. He is more than less a youth. And he should bring an understanding of the developing sporting culture in Guyana and around the world,” said Bess. The Attorney-at-Law continued: “He should bring an appreciation and the understanding of the plight that sports persons face in Guyana. That appreciation should come since he plays a lot of sports. I had the fortune of playing cricket with him as a member of the Bar and he also plays basketball. “He is known in the sports fraternity and he has attended bodybuilding competitions, so he knows the plight that sports fraternities face and he can appreciate the needs of the sports fraternities in Guyana. So it is important for us to remember that he is young and sports oriented,” Bess added.Bess stressed that he is certain that the Minister of Sport has heard the cries and complaints of sports associations prior to 2015 and to present. “It’s about time we see a more hands on approach and a more solution finding policies coming from the Ministry and the Sports Commission,” he declared.Sports Policy Bess then highlighted the importance of the Sports Policy. “I would most strongly propose that the Sports Policy be properly revised by the sports administrators and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and that it be placed before Parliament as soon as it is completed.“And when placed before Parliament, it should not be kept in abeyance. The policy should be brought into effect as soon as possible. It is as important as the construction of a medical institution,” he asserted.“People might underestimate the importance of a Sports Policy, but if you look at the development that sports would have brought to places like Jamaica and Trinidad and so forth, you would inevitably come to the conclusion that without a Sports Policy, those developments and successes would not have occurred. It would not be possible without a Sports Policy” Bess underscored. Financial Support Bess also argued that it was time the sports associations/federations get financial assistance from the government and more frequent consultations with the sporting associations/federations.Said Bess: “I would recommend proper financial support for the different sports association and federations. Of course these sports bodies will have to ensure that they are in full financial compliance with whatever regulations that will be put in place.“But proper financial support should be expected. It has been long talked about, but in the 21st century, it should become a reality. I would also recommend more frequent consultations with the sporting fraternity between government and these different entities, so that a relationship with the potential to lead to proper sports development could be fostered,” Bess concluded.last_img read more

Ravens musings for Week 15

first_imgThe task is clear even if the obstacle standing in their way appears more daunting than a few weeks ago.A win over the San Diego Chargers on Sunday night lands Baltimore in the playoffs for the fourth straight year, but the Ravens have much greater goals in mind, needing to win their final three games to clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the first time in the 16-year history of the franchise. However, 6-7 San Diego suddenly looks more like the team it was projected to be at the start of the season after winning two straight to snap a horrific six-game losing streak and keep its faint playoff hopes alive. As the Ravens return to Owings Mills to begin preparations for the Chargers on Wednesday, here are five thoughts to ponder about 10-3 Baltimore …1. Now that Jimmy Smith has eight games under his belt following the ankle injury that sidelined him for six weeks, it’s time for the rookie to begin earning his first-round reputation. With No. 1 cornerback Lardarius Webb dealing with a turf toe injury that could sideline him for Sunday night’s game in San Diego, the Ravens’ top draft pick in April would make his first NFL start against the likes of tall receivers Vincent Jackson and Malcom Floyd. Smith’s talent is obvious as the rookie has collected two interceptions in recent weeks and broke up two passes against Indianapolis on Sunday. However, you still find him guessing and being caught out of position from time to time. Coach John Harbaugh said it best on Monday in saying Smith is still learning to playing football at the professional level where his talent is often matched by the opposition. The biggest factor working in Smith’s favor in addition to his 6-foot-2 frame and athleticism? The Colorado product is more than confident in his ability, a trait shutdown corners need to have in the NFL. 2. He may never live up to his pre-accident potential, but it was nice to see linebacker Sergio Kindle making some strides against Indianapolis on Sunday. Given the relative state of health the Ravens had on Sunday, it was more than a surprise to see Kindle active for the first time since Week 4 when multiple injuries forced the second-year linebacker into action against the New York Jets. The former Texas standout performed well on special teams and even received some defensive snaps late in the second half. Many want to point to Kindle’s status as a second-round draft pick in 2010 in questioning why he hasn’t played this season and overlook the cruel fact that he nearly died in a fall down two flights of stairs in the days leading up to what was to be his first training camp a year ago. The accident left him virtually deaf in one ear and has forced Kindle to basically learn how to play football all over again, according to Harbaugh. In my conversations with Kindle through the course of the season, he expressed the need to put in the necessary work to earn playing time via special teams and conceded how difficult it was to iron out a role in such a talented defense. Kindle has clearly made some poor choices off the field, but you can’t help but root for him to carve out a spot on the team in which he can contribute on a more regular basis in the future. He may never be the defensive starter the Ravens envisioned when they drafted him, but a strong work ethic could turn him into a role player in the future. 3. John Harbaugh will offer a hand to his brother Jim, but insider trading tips are more common than you think. The elder Harbaugh was asked whether he would be on the phone giving extra information to the 49ers in anticipation of their Monday night showdown with the Pittsburgh Steelers in San Francisco, and while he admitted there could be some of that, it’s not really an uncommon practice in the NFL. Head coaches and assistants alike are connected through a thick web of relationships with the high turnover rate in the career field, leading to open channels of communication. In reality, there are few secrets in the NFL, and it’s unlikely John will provide anything earth-shattering to his brother that would make a dramatic difference in Monday’s outcome. In addition to essentially assuring the Ravens of an AFC North title with a win over Pittsburgh, the 49ers desperately need a win to solidify their chances for the No. 2 seed in the NFC with New Orleans currently holding an identical 10-3 record.Continue >>>last_img read more
