Anshu Jamsenpa, 35, mountaineer extraordinaire and mother of two, is all set to attempt a double ascent of Mount Everest, breaking her previous record of ten days. Her name may be unfamiliar and her lovely, dimpled visage even more, because that’s just the fate of non-mainstream sports achievers. She has been feted at official events and is one of the many nominees of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, but continues to be dogged by obscurity. Not that she minds it in the least, but if recognition helps the cause closest to her heart-the early commissioning of National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) – she’s game.Ironically, it was an Oil India Ltd poster claiming fame on her behalf that connected her with businessman CS Chalam of CCMPL. Inspired by Jamsenpa’s resilience, he furthered her cause by sponsoring the first tier of her ascent and tying up with crowd funding community Catapooolt. Jamsenpa’s was a classic case of an unsung hero that Catapooolt took up with a vengeance. Overnight, webpages professing admiration and support for her sprang up. The going looks good, but she still has some way to go till the entire amount of Rs 35.3 lakh is collected.Catapooolt Managing Director Satish Kataria says, “What we’ve done is broken up the entire journey into metres and people can fund each of these for Rs 399. Hers is a very inspiring story and this gives people the opportunity to feel like they are part of it.”advertisementFor Jamsenpa, it all started seven years ago when a group of climbers organised a rock-climbing session in Bomdila, the place she calls home. The picturesque town poisedon the upper reaches of Arunachal Pradesh has its fair share of adventure seekers and bird-watchers. It’s famed for orchids, bird sanctuaries and lush apple orchards.Undaunted by the forbidding rock face, Jamsenpa, then a mere slip of a girl with no prior mountaineering experience whatsoever, tried her hand at rappelling and finished with a flourish. Marvelling at her lithe athleticism, the trekking programme organisers beckoned her over. She was genuinely surprised when they told her she had a natural flair for climbing. That was when the seed of an outrageous idea was planted in her mind. Not completely trusting in her abilities but keen to attempt the impossible, she enrolled herself in a fifteen-day adventure session in Manipurfollowed by a beginner and advanced mountaineering course. Her husband, a leading tour operator in the area, could only admire her pluck.Jamsenpa’s stored every detail of her first climb, no matter how bittersweet or heart-wrenching in her memory – the biting wind, the parka she wore, the climber who collapsed right before her eyes even as they watched on helplessly. She narrates the mind-numbing experience, making constant references to her sherpa’s fortitude, though it was she who insisted that they push forward in foul weather. Most of the other climbers had made their way back to Base Camp 2 when she realised they were the only two to have covered considerable ground. At the sherpa’s suggestion that they turn back, she was overcome, feeling a lump as big as an icy boulder in her throat. In a moment, she had pulled herself together, resolute and clear-eyed, telling her sherpa, “it’s now or never”.They finished the final part of the ascent in a mere 45 minutes, a distance that takes even seasoned climbers two hours. On their way down, her sherpa said, ‘Anshu, based on your fitness and technical ability, I assure you that you can climb not once, but twice.’ She nodded noncommittally, but she’d already made up her mind and couldn’t wait to have another go. Her plan of doing it within a week was delayed owing to bureaucratic formalities, as was her spontaneous decision to join some climbers on a paragliding episode from the peak. This time she’s not taking any chances with paperwork. She wants to combat the easy obliviousness of people when it comes to the environment. “It’s not that they aren’t aware, it’s just that it’s more convenient to ignore the truth,” she says of her run-ins with fellow townspeople over littering. From rescue techniques to basic recycling practices, her love for adventure sports has lent her a deeper appreciation for the wilderness. It’s hard to inculcate such priorities, she agrees, but that won’t stop her from trying. Her daughters are now 14 and 10, old enough to understand the gravity of what their mother has undertaken. She admits candidly that the one thing she’s proud of is setting an example for them. She says her two favourite adventure sports are river rafting and paragliding and attributes her fitness to a dedicated yoga routine supplemented by power walking. The one sport she’s always been keen to take up is motor car racing. We can’t imagine a better sport to give her an adrenaline rush after the thrill of conquering Mount Everest.HOW TO SELECT THERIGHT MOUNTAINEERING COURSEPick a month-long course over a two week-long moduleThe two-week module offers only a combination of adventure courses and mountaineering basicsBe prepared for gruelling sessions to familiarise yourself with equipmentThe course includes pointers on basic weather predictionadvertisementTOP MOUNTAINEERING INSTITUTES IN INDIANehru Institute of Mountaineering, UttarkashiHimalayan MountaineeringInstitute, DarjeelingAtal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering & Allied Sports, ManaliJawahar Institute ofMountaineering, PahalgamSGMI, Gangtok

FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. – The City of Fort St. John has released the agenda for next Monday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, which includes the results it gathered from residents to hear their thoughts on what regulations cannabis retail operations would need to adhere to after recreational cannabis becomes legal this fall. The City’s Development Director Ken Rogers will be giving a presentation to Council about the feedback the City gathered during a pair of Dot-mocracy events with residents and on its ‘Let’s Talk’ website during the last week in May and first week in June. According to Rogers, over 700 responses were received in the online campaign, with more than 100 more responses given in person during the Dot-mocracy events.Residents were largely supportive of the City allowing cannabis retail operations to set up shop in most commercial zones, with the overwhelming majority favouring the C-2 Downtown Core and C-3 General Commercial zones. 73 percent of residents favoured the City adopting a 200-metre buffer zone from all schools within the City, while feelings were more mixed about the buffer zone from parks. A slim majority – 52 percent – preferred a 200-metre buffer around all City parks, while 48 percent felt that a buffer of 100 m or less was sufficient. When it comes to how far cannabis retail stores need to be from each other, residents were again fairly split on the issue. 47 percent of respondents felt that at least 200 metres of separation was required, while 36 percent felt that no buffer zone between cannabis retail stores was needed. Overall, 53 percent of residents desired a buffer zone of 100 metres or less. The City also asked residents about their thoughts on where cannabis would be able to be consumed, and if the provincial legislation was adequate. The provincial government announced earlier this year that cannabis smoking or vaping would be permitted anywhere the smoking of tobacco is currently permitted, with the exception of places where children would reasonably be expected to be present, such as schools, parks, playgrounds, or beaches. An overwhelming majority of Fort St. John residents – 83 percent – said they felt the provincial legislation was adequate. In his presentation, Rogers says that the next steps are for City staff to prepare a presentation to Council to discuss a proposed Zoning Amendment Bylaw before the Bylaw itself is drafted. A public hearing will also be held before the bylaw is officially adopted by the City. The presentation can be found here: https://fortstjohn.civicweb.net/filepro/documents/83455?preview=88441&attachmenturl=%2FFileStorage%2F6791AA111EB0496DB9C87ECE2C056458-Presentation%2520-%2520Cannabis%2520Consultation%2520Results.pdf

Sidney Rice has a lot on his shoulders this year with the Seattle Seahawks. The problem is, he had surgery on both shoulders and so they are hardly ready for him to take on NFL hits.“This is going to be up to them. I know they’re going to protect me as much as possible,” Rice said of the team. “Preseason is important but it’s not as important as the regular season. They’re going to take their time and progress me along, bring me along as much as possible, and we’ll see what happens during the preseason games.”Rice’s first season with Seattle was marred by injury. He injured one shoulder during the preseason and said he was unaware that the other was also damaged. Rice played as best he could through the two shoulder injuries until a pair of concussions — the second one suffered in Week 12 against Washington — finally landed Rice on injured reserve. His first shoulder surgery on the right one came Jan. 3. His left shoulder was repaired Feb. 16. Still, it could be a while before the Seahawks put him at risk. Initially, they were going to place Rice on the physically unable to perform list for the start of training camp, but he was cleared to participate in drills over the weekend before the first practice.“We’re just going to go through this conservatively, I guess you can say, and lengthen the time of his recovery through this camp. That’s great that he’s working and getting the timing worked, but we won’t get him banged for a while,” coach Pete Carroll said. “We’ll see how that goes as we start to make progress. This is the best time for us to have our hands on him and really work him right and finish off his off-season, and I just think he’s had enough that he’s been through that it warrants taking our time here and not rushing him back.”Rice’s health is of the utmost importance for Seattle this year because of the questions that linger with the rest of its receivers. The competition to find who will start opposite Rice, along with determining the depth of the position, is one of the few true battles the Seahawks have to solve during the next month.“I’m the leader of this group now with Mike (Williams) gone and I just want to lead by example,” Rice said. “These guys know how to play football but we have to bring it every day, bring the right attitude.”
