KMC acts tough to curb illegal constructions in city

first_imgKolkata: Taking a strong stand against illegal building constructions in the city, Mayor Firhad Hakim said on Wednesday that he had fixed responsibility of officials and now sub-assistant and assistant engineers will have to lodge FIRs against illegal construction in their respective jurisdiction.”The Municipal Commissioner has already brought out a notification in which sub-assistant and assistant engineers will have to lodge FIRs against illegal construction in their respective jurisdiction. Then he will inform his concerned Director General (DG) through Executive Engineer about the action taken. Following this the Commissioner with police assistance will go to the spot and pull down the illegal construction,” Hakim said in reply to a query from Left Front councillor Ratna Roy Majumder regarding illegal construction at the monthly meeting on Wednesday. Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari PujaMayor claimed that a group of building department engineers had also agitated against the move of fixing responsibility but the civic body will not buckle under any sort of pressure tactics. “We have already demolished some illegal construction following this procedure and have also acted tough against somebody resorting to such illegal act in connivance with any political party,” Hakim said adding that illegal construction has become a ‘chronic disease’ in the city. Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highwayAccording to Hakim steps have already been taken towards public awareness about such illegal construction. “As we identify any building that is constructed illegally we are putting up a board in front of it stating that this is illegal and hence under scanner,” he added. The KMC in the recent past has regularized some buildings that have slightly deviated from the original plan against payment of charges after conducting special hearing. “I personally believe that allowing such illegal things against payment of fine should not be encouraged. So I have instructed for re hearing of some cases,” the Mayor said. Hakim reiterated that the KMC is forming a team with officials of licence department, solid waste management and Kolkata Police to take action against construction materials dumped here and there on footpaths and roads. “The team will seize the material and may even to the extent of issuing stop work notice of the building infront of which construction materials will remain dumped blocking road or footpath,” he said.last_img
