first_img Share Shaneka and Shameka Gordon (photo courtesy of John Blackie) Gordon Sisters Sweep Weekly GSC Awardscenter_img BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Shaneka and Shameka Gordon (Old Harbour, Jamaica/Community College of Baltimore) added to their already outstanding list of accolades this past week when they were tabbed as the Gulf South Conference Player and Defender of the Week respectively. This marks the second time in GSC soccer history that a set of twins have swept the weekly awards in the same week, with the Gordon’s having done it once last season.Shaneka captures her third career GSC Player of the Week award and her first of this 2009 season. The reining 2008 NCAA Division II National Player of the Year continues to spark a West Florida offense that has outscored their opponents 27-3 in five games. This past week Shaneka combined for eight points on three goals and two assists. She recorded a goal in all three contests including the eventual game winners in the Argos 4-2 come-from-behind victory over Rollins on Friday and in the 6-1 win over Florida Southern on Sunday. She now leads the team with seven goals while assisting one three others for a team high 17 points.Shameka played a solid role on the West Florida defense this week to capture her second GSC Defender of the Week award and third of her career. In the first match of the week she headed a defense that did not allow Spring Hill to get a single shot off in the entire match. Then in a top ten showdown with No. 9 Rollins on Friday she played a significant role on defense that held the Tars scoreless for the final 84 minutes, allowing the Argos to come back and win 4-2.
