Tragic Accident Kills 6

first_imgAt least six persons are confirmed dead as a result of a tragic motor accident involving a National Transit Authority (NTA) bus that occurred yesterday on the Kakata/Gbarnga highway, near Zeanzue in the proximity of the infamous Gbartala Town.Dr. Jefferson Sibly of Phebe Hospital confirmed the death of six passengers, including children. Several others, among them, one of Nimba County’s famous musicians, Levi Zenaway, sustained serious injuries and are being treated at the Phebe Hospital in Bong County.Bong County Police Detachment Traffic Commander, Augustine Kanneh, told the Daily Observer that the accident occurred near Gbartala before approaching Zeanzu Town.He said more than 60 passengers were on board the NTA bus with plate #5138 from Monrovia en route to Ganta, Nimba County.Inspector Kanneh quoted some of the passengers as saying that the driver was on high speed when he lost control and plunged the vehicle into a valley.Up to press time last night, identities of the dead have not been established.Nearby residents who rushed to the scene of the accident, particularly women, wept.Inspector Kanneh told this newspaper that officers from the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) and the Liberia National Police (LNP) were expected on the scene.He also said that the driver of the NTA bus, whose identity was not revealed, and who survived the crash, is in police custody.Police are working with survivors to establish the cause of the accident.Meanwhile, latest report says family members of some of the victims arrived from Ganta, Nimba County.Some citizens who spoke to the Daily Observer attributed the increase in motor car accidents on the road to “reckless driving.”They therefore called on the government to monitor and control speed limits on the country’s highways to prevent deaths as a result of excessive speed.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
