FBI investigating if deadly stabbing on campus was a hate crime

first_img Related University of Maryland Police Department(COLLEGE PARK, Md.) — The FBI is now investigating if an “unprovoked” college campus killing was a hate crime.Early Saturday morning, a black student from Bowie State University was stabbed to death on the University of Maryland campus near a bus stop outside Montgomery Hall at Regents Drive. The University of Maryland Police Department arrested Sean Christopher Urbanski, a 22-year-old white student at the school, in connection with the murder. The victim has been identified as Richard Collins III, an ROTC student who was commissioned into the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and set to graduate on Tuesday.Collins was waiting for an Uber with two friends, according to police, when Urbanski allegedly approached and stabbed him in the chest.Urbanski faces three charges including murder and assault, police said in a news release.Police said Saturday night that the attack was random and “totally unprovoked,” with the suspect and victim having “no prior relationship.”At a press conference Sunday night, University of Maryland Police Chief David Mitchell said Urbanski was a member of an offensive Facebook group, named by the Washington Post as the “Alt-Reich: Nation” group. The FBI added that officials are trying to determine if Collins’ murder was a hate crime.“We should never forget that Lt. Collins was someone who raised his right hand to support and defend the Constitution of the United States as an officer in the United States Army,” FBI agent Gordon Johnson said. “That means he was one who vowed to support and defend and protect all of us.”Copyright © 2017, ABC Radio. FT – Attica: 7/15, Oxford: 4/20Coach Kyle Green Comments:We played much better tonight in several facets of the game against a good ball club.  We did a great job controlling the pace of the game as well. We struggled to score in the 2nd quarter and our free throws were the defining factors in this game.  We take care of those two things and we win this game.  Anthony Schulte did a tremendous job on the defensive end vs their two best players, first Miller than Newberry. It was a bring your own guts type of game for us, Schulte set the tone on D, Andrew Hills did it on the offensive end for us. Hills and freshman Kyan Morris hit a couple of big 3s in the 4th, but their were none bigger than the 3 that freshman Hayden Ruyle hit around the 3 minute mark to tie the game. We couldn’t quite get the lead in the last 2 minutes, but I absolutely loved our toughness tonight and how we controlled the pace.  We will get another chance to play them this Friday. We play Pretty Prairie at their place Tuesday and then travel to Attica on Friday before we head into break.Girls: South Haven 46 Pond Creek 24South Haven finishes 2-1 for the tournament. Scoring for South Haven were: Rachel Turek 13, B. Byers 8, S. Bacon 7, A. Bridges 6, M. Smith 6, K. Butler 4, B. Dark 2. Follow us on Facebook.Follow us on Twitter. Close Forgot password?
